Yoav Bernstein made a quartet of powerful, abstract house records between 2004 and 2006 before disappearing. He returned with 2010’s Love Dubs and now this new EP on Belgian label meakusma. It’s a disjointed affair, albeit one that isn’t without charm and a lot of appeal, especially to those DJs who like their house left-of-centre.
Once you’ve got past the filtered and rather anodyne “Sunset Glow Disko”, the three other tracks each shine. “Electricite” tinkles, hisses and throbs at the same time, although never quite reaching a satisfying peak. “Wisdom Bop” is the standout contribution and whilst the cluttered, lo-fi sound means that it worships at the altar of Mr T. Parrish, there’s an individual finesse to the various elements at play – it does however go on for a little too long at nine minutes. The Protect-U remix (above) showcases some interesting sounds from this little known duo.

Abwegige Melodien, skurile Sequenzen, tragische Momente die einen eigenwilligen Optimismus ausstrahlen und dabei – selbst wenn sie mit allen möglichen Konventionen brechen – wirken als würden sie mitten im Licht des puren Glücks ihren eigenen Gesetzen folgen, als wären sie das Versprechen von einem ganz grossen Fest. Sensationelle Platte.

The eccentric meakusma imprint seems like a perfect fit for maverick Tel Aviv producer DJ Yoav B., who has made a career of not fitting in. Wisdom Traxx EP is his debut for the label, and its four tracks embody a rough and heavily psychedelic kind of house, their grooves frequently obscured by an overarching sense of madcap experimentalism.
For the most part, the title track is a stumbling loop of bright, dizzying patterns, serrated effects, and persistent filter tweaks. The formula is repeated to the point of disorientation (or annoyance), with vocal stabs and what sounds like a flute melody eventually making their way in. ìElectricitÈî follows this heady wonkiness, as the producer builds angular, clashing melodic combinations around a slow house rhythm. ìSunset Glow Disko,î as its title implies, is comprised of colorful heatwave disco loops. Like the best examples of the genre, the track maintains a taut, almost anemic groove, finally breaking into a squiggly, Patrick Adams-esque synth line as the listener reaches the edge of anticipation. Finally, Washington DC’s Protect-U provide a remix for ìWisdom Bopî in their typical mazelike style. It’s a lightly stepping, 707-led composition, maintaining the original’s trippy feel and adding a fractured bass line and dazed synths. DJ Yoav B.’s approach can be overly busy and difficult at times, but Wisdom Traxx EP has a rare sense of daring that is refreshing in itself.

Mitte der nuller Jahre waren die Slo-Mo-Acid-Tracks von Yoav Bernstein aus Tel Aviv in aller Munde. Dann verschwand der israelische Produzent f¸r l‰ngere Zeit, bis er im vergangenen Jahr wieder auf Delsin auftauchte ñ mit ver‰nderter musikalischer Ausrichtung. Mit der “Wisdom Traxx EP”, erschienen auf dem im belgischen Eupen beheimateten Label meakusma, tariert Yoav B. seinen inzwischen ungemein vielschichtigen Sound weiter aus. Den Tracks ist ein freigeistiges, nach Hip Hop und Jazz greifendes Techno-Verständnis zu eigen, das zurecht mit der Musik Anthony Shakirs verglichen wird. Wunderbar stoisch ist die Disco-Loop-Extravaganza “Sunset Glow Disko”. Einen Tauchgang in die finsterste Tiefsee unternimmt dann das US-Duo Protect-U in seinem Remix von “Wisdom Bop”.

Thanks for surprsing me with the Yoav B vinyl! I’m a longtime fan of his and I like it a lot, in fact I felt very thankful that somebody manages to do something that is both House and Disco and still drop some own signature in there. Most other releases I get fail brutally in that aspect. I can’t really pick a favourite tune, I think I will just carry the 12″ around to the next nights out and try them all!
Er hat zwar schon auf Delsin Records veröffentlicht – und das schon einige Male -, fliegt aber immer noch kaum merklich unter dem Radar der Öffentlichkeit, der israelische DJ und Produzent Yoav B. Für die niederländische Kuratorplattform, die sich ganz der Pflege, Förderung und Verbreitung eines klassisch bis zeitgemässen Maschinensouls und Roboterfunks verschrieben hat, hat er mehrere EP’s produziert, zuletzt Love Dubs im vergangenen Jahr.
Nun ist er in das feinmaschige A&R-Netz des belgischen Techno- und Elektronikalabels meakusma geraten. Dieses wusste letztes Jahr mit einer Veröffentlichung von [sic!], einem Projekt von Jules Etienne, Alessandro Tartari und Massimilano Pagliara, sowie in den Jahren zuvor mit mehreren Split-EPs zu überzeugen. Diese 12″, zu denen mehrere Künstler jeweils einen Beitrag geleistet haben, erschienen unter dem Oberbegriff “rüts”. Allerdings ist mir persönlich nur die rüts 3/3 gegenwärtig, auf der Move D, Benjamin Brunn, Even Tuell, Vakula und Immer.Chic mit einem Track vertreten sind.
Dort, auf meakusma, ist Yoav B. sicher gut aufgehoben. Zum einen kann Belgien nämlich auf eine grosse Techno-Vergangenheit zurück- sowie auf eine nicht zu vernachlässigende Gegenwart blicken. Die Ressurectio von R&S Records sei in diesem Zusammenhang beispielhaft erwähnt. Zum anderen brodelt es im Untergrund-nicht-Untergrund gewaltig. Dafür ist das Label meakusma wenigstens mitursächlich, dessen Betreiber auch¸ über die reine Labelarbeit aktiv sind und in diesem Jahr wieder einen attraktiven Programmpunkt zum Musikmarathon Eupen beitragen werden (soweit ich weiss mit Shackleton (live), Upperground Orchestra (live), Ra.H,… und vielen anderen mehr; mehr Infos unter meakusma).
So vielseitig das Programm, bunt schillernd und nur wenig greifbar auch die Musik, die auf meakusma veröffentlichenden Künstler. Man kann den “Labelsound” nur schwer herunterbrechen auf eine einfache, gewissermassen lineare Gleichung mit nur einer Unbekannten. Selbst wenn man sich bemüht, die darauf veröffentlichte Musik analytisch aufzudröseln, wird man mit jeder Äquivalenzumformung auf weitere Unbekannte stossen. Das macht die Musik jedoch sehr spannend, denn sie spielt sich auch nach mehrmaligem Hören nicht leer. So positioniert sich die Wisdom Traxx EP von DJ Yoav B. auf der einen Seite deutlich im Detroit Techno. Brachiale, dreckig-treibende Bässe und Beats vermischen sich mit verspielt psychedelischen Synthesizern. Die Kickdrums stampfen ungelenk, robotisch, und aus Synthesizern und Effekten lässt er frühlingshaft bunte Klangblumen erblühen. Kein Sound für Perlenohrring-Trägerinnen und Barbour-Jacken-Träger.

Yoav Bernstein di stanza a Tel Aviv è un artista obliquo e con una solida reputazione tra i ricercatori più famelici che hanno già potuto appurare il suo estro creativo in uscite seminali su etichette come Delsin e Wabi Sabi Recordings.
Il suo modus operandi fa tesoro dei primordiali insegnamenti alla base di techno ed house ma si evolve dentro una centrifuga ricca di spunti e dinamiche sbilenche. La sua forza è proprio quella di apparire “scoordinato” in strutture rigide come quelle ad uso e consumo del dancefloor. I suoi battiti subiscono in maniera decisa l’influenza dell’hip hop che fornisce quindi quella plasticità che è poi la vera amalgama del suo suono.
Questo nuovo Ep che sarà pubblicato per la sempre intrigante meakusma è un nuovo centro da parte dell’uomo che mai come prima sembra aver intercettato la via del groove con tale maturità e rinnovato coraggio.
Quattro brani per menti aperte, completamente, ogni avventore attento saprà riconoscergli una classe ed una creatività che solo pochi altri artisti riescono ad espletare con questa semplicità.
L’apertura di “Wisdom Bop” è un notevole esperimento techno/hiphop che viaggia nello spazio liberando artigli e sfregandosi lungo le pareti di qualcosa che sa già di dover essere abbattuto, nove minuti di mantra acido e ruvido che non lascerà scampo.
“Electricite” parte seguendo un canovaccio Jack che lascia intendere binari già sondati ma quando il pensiero ha finito d’essere subentra la mutazione in questo ibrido strumentale dalle mille facce, potente come il funk, solido come la techno ma fondamentalmente house.
La b-side inaugura con un fenomenale groove disco dalla potenza devastante: Sunset Glow Disko, una cascata di synth, basso e tastiere per un brano già simbolo della bella stagione ormai alle porte.
In chiusura un remix in chiave psichedelica per Wisdom Bop che viene privata dei tratti decisi e sporchi dell’originale e mandata in delay alieni per il piacere di chi ama decostruire.
Dj Yoav B è uno di quei nomi da tenere in quella lista di riguardo nella quale far accedere in pochi, uno dei pochi ad osare ancora in maniera personale, perché diciamocela tutta, di stramberie ne ascoltiamo tante ma di stranezze che rispondano ad un ideale di musica nuova siamo fin troppo carenti. Release essenziale per quanti amano proporre nei loro set musica ricercatissima e fuori dai canoni.
