Yl Hooi

As part of the Night of Museums 2023, the Blaustein Museum, arsvitha, and meakusma present a special concert at the Schieferstollen in Recht.

YL Hooi is the musical project of Valya Ying-Li Hooi, known for creating a unique blend of elusive, dub-infused songs, minimal electronic percussion, and distant atmospheres. Active in Melbourne’s underground music scene since 2017, Hooi is a member of Kallista Kult and has collaborated with artists such as Jonnine Standish (HTRK), Jarrod Zlatic (Fabulous Diamonds), and Rohan Rebeiro (My Disco). Her debut album, “Untitled,” received critical acclaim, earning the number 1 spot on Boomkat’s Discoveries list. Hooi’s music gracefully shifts between ethereal melodies and textured soundscapes, all infused with her signature dub production style.

Both for live performances and in the studio, Hooi collaborates closely with Tarquin Manek, using a range of instruments like voice, trumpet, bass clarinet, guitar, bass, drum machines, and synths to re-imagine her studio work, embracing improvisation and the nuances of the performance space. YL Hooi’s music explores the boundaries of various genres and traditions, such as post-punk, minimal synth, dub, and krautrock, creating a haunting and seductive sound that resonates with audiences.

The concert will start at 8:00 PM. You can combine a guided tour at 6:30 PM with the concert at 8:00 PM. Admission is free. Due to the limited capacity for guided tours, the museum kindly requests advance reservations at info@schieferstollen-recht.be or by phone at 080/51 00 67.
