Rotondes X meakusma

MEAKUSMA x ROTONDES PART 2

Last June saw the first event of our collaboration with Rotondes in Luxembourg. With concerts by Avina Vishnu, CV & JAB, CS & Kreme and DJ-sets by Vlada, Sensu and Grazon, this evening marked the opening of Nika Schmitt’s new Sweet Zenith installation at the IKOB in Eupen, Belgium. Sweet Zenith is now moving to Luxembourg and will be on show at the Rotondes and for its vernissage, there will be live performances by SKY H1 & Mika Oki, Perila, Sagat and a DJ-set by Gurl. Amber Meulenijzer’s Saab Sculpture will be featured as well.

Nika Schmitt, born in Luxembourg and now based in Rotterdam, has made a name for herself with sound installations and kinetic sculptures dealing with feedback loops and self-destructive systems. She creates multi-sensory installations which either fortify or clash with their surrounding environment. Sky H1 has found a unique approach to contemporary electronic music that brings a heady excitement to the bodily thrills of the club. Collaborating with visual artist Mika Oki, SKY H1 presents a new audiovisual show to celebrate the release of Azure. Perila is a St. Petersburg-born, Berlin-based sound and visual artist, DJ and performer whose sets are like thick narratives drifting through rich sound palettes. From Brussels, Sagat’s sonic world is forever shifting, as alive as his homebase which continuously inspires and drives his music. Luxembourg native Gurl plays punchy, fast-paced sets interspersed with techno and electro gems.

Amber Meulenijzer’s Saab Sculpture will be onsite as well, a series of works placing the Saab 900 car in different contexts, thus questioning, transforming and pimping public and private space. Different sound pieces explore the possibilities of the 12 Toa intercom-loudspeakers mounted on top of its roof, always tailored to the acoustics of the place. Sculpting voyages, resonating with the space, focusing on the physicality of the sound.

Both events and the Nika Schmitt installation are the result of a collaboration between Rotondes, IKOB and Meakusma.
The collaboration enjoys the support of Interreg – Grande Région/Grossregion: Fonds européen de développement régional/ Europäischer Fonds für regionale Entwicklung.

Nika Schmitt sweet zenith

Mirrored in the room, two pendant lights encircle solar panels mounted on poles. Powered by their own luminosity, the pendulums never rest.
The sound installation ‘sweet zenith’ presents elementary forces that are transformed from one to the next and repeatedly meet in chaotic movement. Sound becomes light, light becomes movement and movement again becomes sound, as feedback happens. Sound and light bounce off the walls, constantly changing course. Ultimately, the exhibition space itself creates and limits the entropy of the spectacle and witnesses an endless shining measure of strength.
