Fred Frith & Tom Malmendier, Lia Kohl
presented by ArsVitha & meakusma
Echoes in the ether.
Two experimental, improv-centered concerts at the intimate Kuckuck in Sankt Vith in Belgium. Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith, who has been making noise of one kind or another for almost 50 years, joins Belgian drummer, improviser, and performer Tom Malmendier. Lia Kohl creates and performs sonic landscapes utilizing cello, synthesizers, field recordings, and live radio.
Fred Frith & Tom Malmendier (Eux Sæm – UK/BE)
Fred Frith is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, songwriter, and composer for film, dance, and theater. He was a co-founder of the British underground band Henry Cow, has performed and recorded with John Zorn, The Residents, Brian Eno, Ikue More, Zeena Parkins, and many more, and has produced a ton of solo work. Tom Malmendier hails from Liège in Belgium and is a member of Les Marquises, one of the most radical performance projects in the Belgian French-speaking improv scene, next to performing with a slew of other bands and collaborators.
Malmendier and Frith have been performing together since 2020 and released an album (together with Anil Eraslan and Clara Weil) on Eux Sæm, the label Malmendier runs together with Emilie Škrijelj. Expect musical and performant idiosyncrasy taken to its improvised end and beyond.
Lia Kohl (International Anthem – USA)
Lia Kohl is a cellist, composer, and sound artist based in Chicago. Her wide-ranging practice includes composition and performance, installation, improvisation, and collaboration. She tours nationally and internationally, working in theater, jazz, rock, and experimental contexts. Her work centers curiosity and patience, an exploration of the mundane and profound possibilities of sound. She has recently released The Ceiling Reposes on American Dreams Records and Normal Sounds on Moon Glyph.
Turning the mundane into ethereal beauty, Kohl mixes her sound sources into a richly tonal, tensely whispering, melodic acoustic blend. She is also a member of the acoustic and synthetic quintet Honestly Same.
