The Meakusma Weekend will take place in Eupen, Belgium from September 4th to 6th. As an alternative to the Meakusma Festival, which had to be canceled due to the Covid-19 crisis, the Meakusma Festival will be presented in adapted form. There will be genre-crossing live concerts and DJ sets as well as radio art and panel discussions with performing artists. The program will be streamed via several online radio stations. There will also be sound installations, isolated concerts and performances at various locations in Eupen.
 
IKOB X Meakusma
Meakusma and the IKOB – Museum for Contemporary Art step up their collaboration this year and expand it over several weeks around the Meakusma Weekend which is presented as an alternative to the canceled Meakusma Festival 2020. Three projects will be on show and the Meakusma Weekend radio program is partly streamed live from the IKOB.
 
Belgian artist AnneMarie Maes presents “The Bee Agency Project” (September 4th to October 4th), an intelligent guerrilla beehive made of biomaterial plus video and sound give an insight into the fascinating inner world of bee colonies. American composer Britton Powell presents his audiovisual work “If Anything Is” (September 4th to September 6th). Using electronic music, video and percussion, he explores psychoacoustic phenomena, minimalism and traditions of non-western music. The Goethe-Institut is setting up the mobile listening station made for the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2019 in Eupen (August 15th to September 6th). It will feature commissioned compositions by six artists.
 
The Bee Agency Project by AnneMarie Maes
September 4th to October 4th Together with Musica – Impulscentrum voor Muziek, Meakusma presents “The Bee Agency Project” at the IKOB.
 
With the “Bee Agency Project”, AnneMarie Maes aims to give Apis mellifera (Western honey bees) back their autonomy and support colonies to live in the wild again. Domesticated by beekeepers for a long time, their apiaries became honey factories. AnneMarie Maes aims to counteract this. “The Bee Agency Project” plays an exemplary role in the public perception of biodiversity and sustainability. The project combines art, design and science. Bees, humans, microorganisms and plants work together to ensure a solid foundation for the further development of our ecosystem.
The project is based on two pillars. There is a mobile “guerrilla beehive”, made of biomaterial and equipped with sensors that monitor and analyse the inner workings and the environment of the beehive. There is also the video Variation Games (21’59 ”), a compressed compilation of a year-long audiovisual observation of the behaviour of a colony of honey bees in the beehive.
The intelligent guerrilla beehives project received an honorary award in the “Hybrid Art” category at Ars Electronica.
AnneMarie Maes founded the Urban Bee Laboratory in Brussels in 2009. It serves as a space of observation and exploration for a group of artists, scientists and technicians that does not interfere with the bees lives. The aim is to raise public awareness through art installations, lectures and workshops.
 
If Anything Is by Britton Powell – audiovisual installation
September 4th to September 6th “If Anything Is” explores an ecstatic exchange of experiences in the face of a rapidly accelerated media and business world. As a meditation on the intersection of technology, ritual and urban landscape, the work draws a map through scenes shot in New York City.
 
Britton Powell is an American composer from Brooklyn. Using electronic music, video and percussion, he explores psychoacoustic phenomena, minimalism and traditions of non-western music. Powell has worked with Jon Hassell, Matmos, Lucy Railton, Jon Gibson, Huerco S and many others. He has performed at venues around the world, including the Center Pompidou (Paris), the Barbican Center (London), Today’s Art Festival (The Hague), the Ultima Festival (Oslo), the Unsound Festival (Krakow), The Kitchen (NYC) and in the Guggenheim House (Japan).

Natascha Süder Happelmann
August 15th to September 20th, 2020 Together with the Goethe-Institut Brüssel, Meakusma will be presenting the mobile listening station of the Ankersentrum (surviving in the ruinous ruin) project by Natascha Süder Happelmann at the IKOB in Eupen. Süder Happelmann’s listening station was part of the artistic contribution to the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2019. The station will include the radio version of the “Tribute to Whistle” sound installation which could be heard in the pavilion, the video trilogy that was published on social media over the course of the project, the released album based on the sounds of the installation and the comprehensive publication that was published by Archive Books.

Jessica Ekomane is a composer, musician and sound artist who currently lives in Berlin. In her work she combines elements of psychoacoustics, traditional music and Gestalt theory.
 
Musician and composer Maurice Louca is one of the most productive and experimental protagonists in the up-and-coming art scene in Egypt. Free improvisation, cosmic jazz, trance-like traditional music, Arabic melodies and minimalism all meet in his unique and specific vision.
 
DJ Marfox is a key figure in Lisbon’s Afro-Portuguese electronic music scene. His music combines African-influenced dance music such as Kuduro, Kizombo, Funaná and Tarraxinha with house and techno.
 
Jako Maron identifies as a sound alien and healer from the island of La Réunion who aims at rhyming tradition with experiment. He therefor uses modular synthesis, drum machines and the Crackle Box to transform and reinvent Maloya and Séga, the two folk genres of La Réunion whose origins date back to African slave communities.
 
Artist and composer Tisha Mukarji is one of the best pianists on the contemporary music scene. From an early age she developed an interest in the piano and how to tune it.Influenced by her computer science studies, Elnaz Seyedi composes chamber music for selected ensembles, fearlessly redefining new music.

Vom 4. bis 6. September findet das Meakusma Weekend in Eupen, Belgien statt. Als Alternative zum Meakusma Festival, welches aufgrund der Corona-Krise abgesagt werden musste, wird das ganze Spektrum Meakusmas in angepasster Form präsentiert. Zu erwarten sind also Live-Konzerte und DJ-Sets die durch die Genres gleiten und die Zuhörer einladen, sich treiben zu lassen. Hinzu kommen Radiokunst sowie Diskussionsrunden mit den Künstlern. Das Programm wird über mehrere Online-Radios gestreamt. Zudem gibt es Klanginstallationen, vereinzelte Konzerte und Performances an verschiedenen Orten in Eupen verteilt.

Meakusma und IKOB – Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst gehen in ihrer Zusammenarbeit in diesem Jahr einen Schritt weiter und weiten diese über mehrere Wochen rund um das Meakusma Weekend, welches als Alternative zum abgesagten Meakusma Festival 2020 präsentiert wird, aus. Drei Projekte werden gemeinsam realisiert, zudem wird teilweise live vom IKOB aus beim Meakusma Weekend Radioprogramm gestreamt. Die belgische Künstlerin AnneMarie Maes stellt „The Bee Agency Project“ vor (4. September bis 4. Oktober). Ein intelligenter Guerilla-Bienenstock aus Biomaterial, Video und Sound geben Einblick in die faszinierende Innenwelt von Bienenvölkern. Der amerikanische Komponist Britton Powell präsentiert sein audiovisuelles Werk „If Anything Is“ (4. September bis 6. September). Anhand von elektronischer Musik, Video und Percussion erkundet er psychoakustische Phänomene, Minimalismus und Traditionen der nichtwestlichen Musik. Das Goethe Institut baut die mobile Hörstation des Deutschen Pavillons der Venedig Biennale in Eupen auf (15. August bis 6. September). Die in Auftrag gegebenen Kompositionen von sechs Künstlern werden dort zu hören sein.

AnneMarie Maes bezweckt mit dem „Bee Agency Project“ der Apis mellifera (Westliche Honig-Biene) Autonomie zurückgeben und Kolonien unterstützen wieder in freier Wildbahn zu leben. Lange Zeit von Imkern domestiziert, wurden ihre Bienenhäuser zu Honig-Fabriken. Dem möchte AnneMarie Maes entgegenwirken. „The Bee Agency Project“ spielt eine vorbildliche Rolle bei der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung von Biodiversität und Nachhaltigkeit. Das Projekt verbindet Kunst, Design und Wissenschaft. Bienen, Menschen, Mikroorganismen und Pflanzen arbeiten zusammen, um eine solide Grundlage für die weitere Entwicklung unseres Ökosystems zu gewährleisten.
 
Das Projekt steht auf zwei Pfeilern: es gibt einen mobilen „Guerilla-Bienenstock“, gebaut aus Biomaterial und bestückt mit Sensoren, die das Innenleben und die Umgebung des Bienenstocks beobachten und analysieren. Und zudem gibt es das Video Variation Games (21’59 ”) ist eine komprimierte Zusammenstellung einer einjährigen audiovisuellen Beobachtung des Verhaltens einer Kolonie von Honigbienen im Bienenstock.
 
Das Projekt der intelligenten Guerrilla-Bienenstöcke erhielt einen Ehrenpreis in der Kategorie „Hybrid-Kunst“ bei Ars Electronica.
 
AnneMarie Maes gründete 2009 das Brüsseler Urban Bee Labor. Es ist der Wirkungsraum einer Gruppe von Künstlern, Wissenschaftlern und Technologen, in dem diese Bienenvölker beobachten können, ohne deren Leben zu beeinträchtigen. Ziel ist es zudem, die Öffentlichkeit anhand von Kunstinstallationen, Vorträge und Workshops zu sensibilisieren.

4. September bis 6. September “If Anything Is” erforscht einen ekstatischen Erfahrungsaustausch angesichts einer stark beschleunigten Medien- und Geschäftswelt. Als Meditation über die Schnittstelle von Technologie, Ritual und Stadtlandschaft zeichnet die Arbeit eine Karte durch in New York City gedrehte Szenen.
 
Britton Powell ist ein amerikanischer Komponist aus Brooklyn. Anhand von elektronischer Musik, Video und Percussion erkundet er psychoakustische Phänomene, Minimalismus und Traditionen der nichtwestlichen Musik. Powell hat mit Jon Hassell, Matmos, Lucy Railton, Jon Gibson, Huerco S und vielen anderen zusammengearbeitet. Er trat in Konzerten rund um den Globus auf, darunter im Centre Pompidou (Paris), im Barbican Centre (London), auf dem Today’s Art Festival (Den Haag), beim Ultima Festival (Oslo), beim Unsound Festival (Krakau), im The Kitchen (NYC) und im Guggenheim-Haus (Japan).

15. August bis 20. September 2020 Gemeinsam mit dem Goethe-Institut Brüssel präsentiert Meakusma im IKOB Eupen die mobile Hörstation des Projekts Ankersentrum (surviving in the ruinous ruin) von Natascha Süder Happelmann. Diese macht Teile des künstlerischen Beitrags im Deutschen Pavillon auf der Venedig Biennale 2019 für ein weltweites Publikum erfahrbar. Die Station umfasst die Radiofassung der Klanginstallation „tribute to whistle“ 2019, die im Pavillon zu hören war, die Videotrilogie, die im Verlauf des Projekts auf den Sozialen Medien veröffentlicht wurde, die Schallplatte und die umfassende Publikation, die bei Archive Books erschienen ist.

Jako Maron ist als ›Sound-Alien und Heiler‹ von der Insel La Réunion bekannt, dem es gelingt, Tradition mit Experiment zu reimen. Von ihrem Informatikstudium beeinflusst, komponiert Elnaz Seyedi Kammermusik für ausgewählte Ensembles und definiert unerschrocken die Neue Musik um.
